McCandless Offended Because He Was Offered Money?

Post Title: McCandless Offended Because He Was Offered Money?

"He acted real offended. I told him, "Man, you gotta have money to get along in this world,' but he wouldn't take it. Finally I got him to take some swiss Army knives and a few belt knives; I convinced him they'd come in handy in Alaska and that he could maybe trade them for something down the road." (Krakauer 46).

Topic: Travel Advice/Fool

Here, McCandless and Burres went to swap meet to buy some gear for McCandless's trip to Alaska. McCandless did not like to accept money from other people and he even feels offended when he was offered money by Burres. I believe that he is a fool for not taking the money he was offered because that one item could have saved his life in the Alaskan Wilderness but decided not to accept it and died from it. He should have been more prepared to go out into the harshest weather in the United States and he basically went out there to kill himself. I think that asking for money is not always the solution but if it is a situation where you need the money to survive, then I think it is acceptable. If he was not ignorant and listened to other people's opinions he probably could have survived in any situation but decided not to and his life came to an end at a young age.
